Clinical Observations - Job Shadows
Skagit Regional Health seeks to provide high school graduates, who are at least 18 years of age, the opportunity to observe clinical care; to see first-hand what a qualified medical or nursing professional does on a daily basis. Job Shadows may also be conducted in non-clinical areas such as Engineering, Materials Management and Food Services.
We provide individual observers the opportunity to observe for up to 8 hours per calendar year. These hours are intended to be part of a larger mosaic of healthcare career exploration activities such as volunteering.
Instructions to Clinical Observation Applicants
Step 1: Find an SRH employee to SPONSOR your job shadow/clinical observation.
This is the person who you will shadow and will be responsible for your supervision while you are at our facility.
How to Find a Sponsor - If you are having difficulty contacting a potential sponsor Volunteer Services can provide contact information for a department leader who can help.
When sending emails to department leaders, it is important to introduce yourself including where you are in your educational journey and what the goal is for this observation experience. While we are not able to provide observation experiences to everyone who asks, we will make every effort to provide experiences appropriate to your educational experience.
Job shadows are not allowed in the following areas: Family Birth, Surgical Services, Emergency Department, Mental Health, Pediatrics, Pharmacy, Social Services and Financial Counseling.
Step 2:Download the Job Shadow Approval/Instructions to Applicants form and complete it with your sponsor.
Your sponsor will verify your immunization status. They will work with you to select a date, time and location for your shadow. When selecting a date, please allow 2-3 weeks to complete the application process.
You, your sponsor and their department manager or director will need to sign this form. When complete, it MUST be emailed to [email protected]. Upon receipt, we will send you a link to complete formal “Job Shadow Application” online.
Step 3: COMPLETELY fill out and submit the application form online.
Volunteer Services will complete a required background check, will notify you if you are accepted and will send instructions on picking up your badge for shadowing day.
Step 4: Pick up your badge and begin your shadow. When your observation is finished, please return the badge to your sponsor.
Email [email protected] with any questions regarding this process.
