Graduate Medical Education to Improve Health Access

Skagit Regional Health is committed to excellence in graduate medical education (GME) with the goal of improving health access and health status for rural, minority and underserved persons living across Northwest Washington. Our programs involve a mutually beneficial educational relationship between regional hospitals, clinics, providers and community health resources.

Our graduate medical education programs offer state-of-the-art community-based training. We currently have residencies in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine at this time.

Committed to Excellence

The Skagit Regional Health Graduate Medical Education Program is committed to excellence in community-based training of physicians. We are a training site for many different learners in our various health care teams. 

As a teaching hospital, we are a core site for Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences Osteopathic Medicine students in their third and fourth years of clinical training. We are also a training site for many other learners including medical students, medical residents, nurse practitioner students, pharmacy students, nursing students, medical assistants, etc.

Skagit Regional Health is the third largest health district in Washington. We are a health care leader in the state, providing advanced, quality and comprehensive services to the people in our communities. Nestled between the rugged North Cascades and the beautiful Puget Sound, you’ll find the communities that make up the service area of Skagit Regional Health. We serve all of our neighbors throughout Skagit, Island and north Snohomish counties. Skagit Regional Health is made up of Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington, and approximately two dozen clinic locations across the region.

Accreditations, Sponsorships and Partnerships

Skagit Regional Health is the Sponsoring Institution, accredited by the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education), for residency programs in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine. Our Family Medicine program has “Osteopathic Recognition” as a complement to our Family Medicine training. We are affiliated with two of our local medical schools so far - University of Washington School of Medicine and Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine.

As a teaching hospital, we are approved for thirty resident physicians. Currently we have four residents per year in Family Medicine (for a total of 12 in the 3 year program) and six per year in Internal Medicine (for a total of 18 in the 3 year program). Our residents provide inpatient medical care at Skagit Valley Hospital, and outpatient care mainly at the Family Medicine Residency Clinic and the Internal Medicine Residency Clinic, both located in Mount Vernon.
