Robotic-Assisted Surgery for Back Surgeries with the Globus ExcelsiusGPS® Robotic Navigation System
In August of 2023, the Globus ExcelsiusGPS® Robotic Navigation System, was added to our Surgical Services Department to assist with precise back procedures. Robotic-assisted surgery is shown to improve patient outcomes, reduce recovery time and shorten hospital stays.
Performing Complex Procedures Through Small Incisions

The Globus ExcelsiusGPS® Xi™ Robotic Navigation System is housed at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon and is accessible for patients across the Skagit Regional Health system needing a robotic surgery procedure offered by our spine specialist. Each surgeon offering robotic surgery is specially trained to use the robotic computer and optical technologies, completing many hours of practice and specialized education. These advances in surgical techniques allow our surgeons to perform complex procedures through small incisions as an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy.
The Globus ExcelsiusGPS® Robotic Navigation system uses diagnostic images of the patient, that are displayed on a computer screen, to help guide surgeons in providing precise, minimally invasive procedures. The images help the surgeon create a surgical plan based on the patient’s individual anatomy and determine the size and placement of screws. The robotics and navigation reduce the length of procedures, improves accuracy and dramatically lowers the level of radiation exposure from fluoroscopy, which is good for the patient and the OR team. In addition, the smaller incisions mean less tissue damage and a shorter hospital stay.
