Understanding the Medicare Hospice Benefit

Palliative Care Services at Skagit Regional HealthSome patients and families delay hospice care because they think it is expensive. You can have peace of mind by learning about the Medicare Hospice Benefit. When a patient starts care with Hospice of the Northwest, most costs are covered 100 percent, including:

  • Care team visits: All visits with the hospice care team are covered, including those with a hospice provider, nurse, social worker, spiritual counselor and care aid. Patients also have access to nursing support 24/7 by phone.
  • Medication: All prescriptions for pain relief and symptom relief are covered when related to the patient’s primary diagnosis.
  • Medical equipment: Most durable medical equipment is covered, including hospital beds, wheelchairs, oxygen equipment, etc.
  • Medical supplies: Bandages, catheters and other medical supplies are included in the coverage.
  • Grief support: The patient’s loved ones are eligible for up to 13 months of bereavement support.

Medicaid, VA benefits and most private insurers provide similar coverage. Patients who are uninsured or underinsured may qualify for financial assistance through Hospice of the Northwest Foundation. We have never turned away a patient for inability to pay.
