Tips to make your preventative colonoscopy as pleasant as possible

The words “colonoscopy” and “pleasant” are not typically used in the same sentence, but Skagit Regional Health is taking intentional steps to better support our patients throughout the preparation process.
At a time when colorectal cancer rates among young people are increasing, options and ease of access to a preventative colonoscopy are more important than ever—because having the peace of mind is worth it.
Schedule a preventative colonoscopy without a referral
Skagit Regional Health offers preventative colonoscopies without a referral to adults age 45 and older through the Direct Access scheduling program. This is a great way to bypass the waiting period of a referral and get this item checked off your to-do list.
Options for bowel preparation
A colonoscopy requires thorough preparation in advance to ensure the bowels are properly cleared so that any polyps or lesions can be seen. Preparation involves temporary dietary adjustments prior to the procedure and taking a solution or tablet when scheduled. Talk with your provider about the options available to prepare for your colonoscopy. Skagit Regional Health provides detailed instructions, as well as tips for making prep as successful and pleasant as possible.
Quick tips for more pleasant colonoscopy prep:
- Stock up on clear liquids other than water. Examples include: fat-free chicken or vegetable broths, sports drinks, Jell-O and popsicles.
- Drink the bowel preparation solution cold.
- Use a straw when drinking the solution.
- Have a sip of Sprite or Ginger Ale after each glass of bowel preparation fluid.
- Stay as active as tolerated. Walk around your home (stay near a bathroom) to provoke bowel movements. This can help to avoid nausea.
- If you become nauseated or feel like you are going to vomit, stop drinking the preparation. Start drinking the solution again (usually in 30 minutes) after the nausea goes away.
- Use an over-the-counter diaper rash cream or petroleum jelly to help prevent skin irritation when wiping. Remove any creams before you arrive for your procedure.
- Use alcohol-free wet wipes.
Patients are always welcome to call us with any questions or concerns as they prepare.
Peace of mind through early detection
In addition to easier scheduling options and support as you prepare, possibly most important is the peace of mind you feel knowing you’ve completed an important health screening. Skagit Regional Health now utilizes AI-assisted technology to detect polyps and lesions earlier than ever. This gives providers a chance to detect any signs of cancer earlier, leading to more effective treatment.
Don’t delay getting your next preventative colonoscopy. Skagit Regional Health has made it easier than ever to get screened and early detection is key.
