Skagit Regional Health establishes new weapons policy

Citing an increase in violence in the healthcare setting, many hospitals and health facilities in the state have adopted a weapons policy prohibiting firearms or any dangerous weapons. Skagit Regional Health, including Skagit Valley and Cascade Valley hospitals, its associated clinics and outpatient facilities, has opted to adopt a weapons policy effective Friday, August 2, 2024.

“Patients are asked to leave their weapons at home,” says Brian Schuman, Regional Director of Security & Emergency Management. Optionally, Security staff may store the weapon on-site. “Healthcare facilities are often emotionally charged,” says Schuman. “This policy has been adopted for the safety of staff, providers, visitors and our patients.”

According to the policy, SRH may refuse to provide service to those who won’t comply with the weapons policy. This does not apply to emergency patients, active military or law enforcement personnel on duty. Schuman adds, “It is important that everyone in our facilities feels safe to provide care or share sensitive information without the threat or potential of violence.”
