What is Cardiac Rehab?
Cardiac rehab is a three-phase customized exercise program that teaches you to be more active and to make lifestyle changes that can lead to a stronger heart and better health. It is designed to help you recover from a heart attack, heart disease, or surgery and to reduce your risk of future heart problems.
If you have a heart problem, had surgery, or have never exercised, you may be afraid to exercise or don’t know how to start. Our cardiac rehab designs a program just for you, based on your health, history and goals. Our team consists of a nurse and a certified clinical exercise physiologist to give you support and help you succeed! Our main goals are to help you improve your lifestyle and to offer you support!
We offer benefits to patients with the following diagnosis:
- Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
- Coronary artery bypass grafting
- Stable angina
- Heart valve replacement
- Congestive heart failure
Phase One can take place while a patient is hospitalized or over the phone once the patient returns home. An exercise specialist will provide personalized education and counseling.
Phase Two is an outpatient monitored exercise program that begins one to three weeks after the patient leaves the hospital. Using a state-of-the-art telemetry system, patients’ heart rates and rhythms are monitored during exercise. Vital signs are taken before and after exercise. Progress is tracked and notes can be sent to the patient’s provider for follow-up visits. During this phase, patients will also learn about:
- How the heart works
- Healing after open heart surgery and heart attack
- Angina and what to do for chest pain
- Risk factors that cause heart problems
- Safe exercise and pacing yourself at home
- Low fat, low cholesterol nutrition
- Understanding food labels
- Managing stress
- Medication management
- Sexual activity
Most insurance covers three classes per week for six to eight weeks.
Phase Three (Heart Healthy Fitness) is a maintenance program designed for patients who have completed Phase Two and are ready to continue to incorporate exercise into their routine. Heart Healthy Fitness is open to the community and can be utilized by individuals who want to work on improving strength, balance and cardiovascular fitness.
Benefits of Heart Healthy Fitness
Our Heart Healthy Fitness Program focuses on individual goals and offers plenty of one-to-one attention. We work on strength training, balance and cardiovascular fitness. This program offers much more than a traditional gym membership, with medically-trained staff on-site and the ability to track participants’ vital signs before, during and after exercising. Participants typically attend classes two or three times per week. Many participants remain in the program because of the personal attention from staff and relationships built with other class members. Classes are available Monday through Friday.
