“Topping out” Ceremony Represents Milestone at Mount Vernon Surgery Center
On Friday, October 21, Skagit Regional Health representatives, along with BNBuilders, Inland Steel Erectors, B&B Fabricators and the other subconsultants gathered to watch the “topping out” ceremony at the new Mount Vernon Surgery Center.
The first rain of Fall could not dampen the excitement and pride of the construction crew as the final steel beam was raised to the top level of the 60,000 square foot structure. In keeping with traditions of such an event, the beam was covered in dozens of signatures from the construction teams, our board members and guests, plus a small evergreen tree and an American flag.
As has happened dozens of times over the past three weeks, the crane slowly raised the beam into position, where it was welcomed by a pair of ironworkers who fastened it into position to the applause of the crew on the ground level.
It has been a wonder to watch the well-choreographed process in recent weeks as the ironworkers, with full safety gear, walked and sat and moved along the steel beams as each new beam was put precisely into place.
Skagit Regional Health CEO, Brian Ivie mentioned it brings him great joy to be a part of this milestone and success on a project that is so important to our community as we provide essential healthcare services. He also expressed Skagit Regional Health’s appreciation for the care and extra effort the construction team is taking to make this building a reality.
Senior Project Manager Mike Berger with the general contractor, BNBuilders, praised the team for reaching the milestone by “hitting it on schedule and hitting it safely.” He said the team looks forward to “delivering a product that will help this community for years to come.”
The “topping out” ceremony is a tradition in the construction industry that dates back hundreds of years and celebrates the construction process and introduces the building to the public.
The tree is a key symbol in the steel trade, signifying that construction has safely reached the highest point and indicates good luck for the future of the building project – and its eventual occupants, according to a December 2000 article in Modern Steel Construction.
This project is off to an amazing start and this “topping out” provided a moment to celebrate and look forward to the completion and opening of this facility in January 2024 to provide access to care in our community.
