Calvin McKinney, Security Guard for Skagit Regional Health, was recently honored by the Burlington Police Department for his bravery and heroism.
On the night of August 31, 2022, a patient was brought into the Skagit Valley Hospital Emergency Department while in police custody. While waiting for clear-to-book status, the patient was able to elope from the Emergency Department into the lobby.
Officer Goss of the Burlington Police Department (Burlington PD) managed to temporarily subdue the eloped patient but it quickly escalated into a physical struggle and the patient and police officer both ended up on the floor.
Security Guard McKinney happened to be in the Emergency Department for an unrelated issue. When notified of the event, McKinney quickly sprang into action, tackling the subject and then rolling him over to control him. This gave Burlington PD officer the time needed to reassess and, along with other arriving SRH security officers, ultimately gain control and handcuff the subject.
“(Calvin’s) actions prevented the subject from further violence that could have resulted in the injury to Officer Goss as well as the patients, visitors and employees all present in the lobby,” said Roy Steigerwalt, Security Manager and Scott Shields, Security Supervisor in a joint statement written in a formal recognition letter to Calvin.
In addition to a recognition letter, Calvin also received a “Security Challenge Coin” to recognize his heroism, outstanding performance and dedication to his job, the organization and our patients. Steigerwalt and Shields further commented that McKinney’s actions were that of a positive role model for his fellow officers.
“Calvin is a good officer and we are privileged to have him as part of our Security Team,” said Steigerwalt.
Burlington PD also took the time to recognize McKinney with a Certificate of Valor. This is only the third time a civilian has ever been awarded this honor.
“I felt concerned over everyone’s well-being,” McKinney said. He went on to emphasize the strength of his team when situations like this arise. “I believe I can speak for the team on this, but I strongly feel as if anyone on our team would be willing to assist anyone in need,” he said.
