There are many ways to incorporate healthy changes into your life. Thank you to Angel Abbott, Regional Director of Patient Access and Interpreter Services for sharing her story on how she has recently made changes to her routine and found new ways to incorporate consistent healthy habits into her life.

There are many ways to incorporate healthy changes into your life. Thank you to Angel Abbott, Regional Director of Patient Access and Interpreter Services for sharing her story on how she has recently made changes to her routine and found new ways to incorporate consistent healthy habits into her life. 

What is a day in the life look like for Angel Abbott? 
I am working on my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration – Healthcare Management. I work full time, go to school full time and have three kids. Two of my children are currently at home and going to college and one is in high school. My daughter, a freshman in high school, plays many sports and I drive her to her practices and sporting events during the week and on weekends. I bring along my laptop to assure I take every moment I can to continue my college studies. During her softball games, I am on the sidelines cheering her on while on my laptop, working on school work (on nice days, of course; the laptop is not brought out on rainy days).

Why is health a priority for you?
I decided at the end of January I needed to get healthier. I have spent most of my adult life caring for and providing for my kids and husband to make sure their needs were being met. Now, it is my time to focus on myself. I have learned over the last couple of months how to incorporate healthier meals for myself; sometimes my family partakes in these meals and sometimes they do not and that’s OK with me. My kids are old enough to make their own meals and if you can imagine, it is not very often we are all home at the same time. I started a diet in January to live a healthier lifestyle and have lost more than 45 pounds. I want to be around to continue to watch my kids grow and meet their goals, graduate college, start their careers and someday have families of their own. I have dreams to travel and visit other states and countries and want to have the energy to do this.

What are ways that you weave healthy activities into your daily life? Shifting my mindset was key for me. Eating right and not eating on the run, so a lot of planning. I refuse to make excuses and choose to make healthier choices. I increased my water intake and drink more than 100 ounces a day. Knowing that once I leave work I do not have time to go to the gym or work out at home due to my commitment to my college studies, I have made it a point to make sure I am walking on my lunch break and/or both of my fifteen-minute breaks at least three to four times a week. In the past, I never took these breaks and instead worked through them.
