According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, six million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs in 2017. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon installed a new drop box in the main lobby in April 2019 to provide residents with a convenient place to properly and safely dispose of unneeded medications free of charge. In a partnership with MED-Project, the kiosk provides a location to dispose of unwanted or expired medication, including controlled substances. The kiosk is in full view of the main desk, is visible on lobby security cameras and is bolted to the floor.

The next National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be October 26, 2019. National Take-Back Day is a safe, convenient and responsible way to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs.
