About Skagit Valley Hospital

Skagit Valley Hospital opened in 1958 to serve the Skagit Valley community. The hospital expanded in 2007 and is now licensed for 137 beds. Patients are served by highly trained clinical nursing teams and board-certified hospitalists. Skagit Valley Hospital provides a multidisciplinary approach, with clinical specialists and support services available to provide compassionate, comprehensive care to every patient.

Skagit Valley Hospital features a full range of services including the latest surgery techniques; Level III Emergency Department; well appointed Family Birth Center; diagnostics and an advanced heart and vascular institute that includes the only cardiac catheterization labs in the area.

Whidbey Coffee

The Whidbey Coffee espresso stand inside Skagit Valley Hospital is open Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is located on the first floor, near the Diagnostic Imaging Department on the main hospital corridor.

Gift Shop

The Gift Shop is located in the front lobby at Skagit Valley Hospital, near the elevators and the Emergency Department doors. The Gift Shop offers a wide array of toys, games, candy, flowers, baby gifts and more! The Gift Shop is run by a staff of dedicated volunteers, to raise funds for equipment and programs at Skagit Valley Hospital. Gift Shop hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Patient Meals

Wholesome, nourishing and well-balanced meals are an important part of a patient’s treatment and recovery. Skagit Valley Hospital makes every effort to provide nutritious meals that are prepared according to your physician’s orders.

Meals are delivered to patient rooms three times per day. Patients will use the meal card on their bedside to call in their meal orders to the kitchen prior to meal time. Check with your nurse if you have questions about the ordering process.

If your visitor wants to dine in your room with you, he or she may go to the Skagit Bistro on the first floor and purchase a meal to bring back to the room. Skagit Bistro is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

Your Clinical Team

Skagit Valley Hospital provides a new level of care for patients while they are in the hospital. Our board-certified hospitalists are internal medicine physicians, with specialized expertise in caring for more complex patients. They are specifically skilled in monitoring hospital patients for any complications or issues with new medication management, as well as coordinating care across all providers.

In addition, Skagit Valley Hospital provides pediatric hospitalists 24/7 as part of a pediatric hospitalist program partnership with Seattle Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington Medical Center. This specialized team cares for newborns and older children while in the hospital at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon.

Leaving the Hospital

Discharge planning is a crucial aspect of patient care. Discharge nurses help to ensure that quality medical care and comprehensive instructions are provided, in order to prevent re-hospitalization. The discharge nurse is the liaison between the patient and their clinical team at Skagit Regional Health.

Discharge nurses will:

• Establish patient referral: Patients may need additional healthcare services following discharge, such as physical therapy or a primary care physician.
• Initiates discharge planning procedures: Discharge nurses work with the physician and the patient’s clinical team to be certain that all plans are in order for the time of discharge. They review these plans with the patient and their family and answer any questions that arise.
• Verify equipment and safety at home: The discharge nurses verify that the patient has any devices needed for home and verify insurance coverage. Additionally, they will review any safety concerns, such as possible fall precautions, and ensure the patient has anything additional needed to mitigate any safety concerns.

Discharge nurses will work with you and your family, along with your healthcare team, to assist with coordinating your insurance benefits and any additional needs to prepare you for discharge.
